Apprenticeships are a way for employees to continue learning whilst working and gain a nationally recognised qualification (NVQs). Employers have been involved in designing to meet their business needs and to deliver a structured programme of qualifications aided by funding from the government.

Most of the training takes place in the workplace with assessment and additional training being provided through an approved training provider. Connexions Kent can put you in touch with a local training provider with experience of delivering training for your industry.

The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) provide funding for the training element of an Apprenticeship. The level of funding available depends on the age of the Apprentice, the targeted qualification level and the occupation sector. The contribution may cover the full cost of a training programme. The training provider works with Employers to develop training to meet both the needs of the company and the Apprentice. Training Providers handle most of the financial and administrative requirements.

The salary an employer pays their Apprentice can vary depending on the employer but it is a requirement of the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) that in England apprentices earn a minimum of £95 per week. An Apprentice’s salary should rise as they become more experienced and skilled in their role.

There are two types of Apprenticeships available:

Apprenticeship

Advanced Apprenticeship

The Apprentice works towards an NVQ up to Level 2 and will also get training in Key Skills areas such as communication and team working. NVQs are available in over 100 occupations, for example office work, construction trades and retail

The Apprentice works towards an NVQ up to Level 3 or 4, which is equivalent to A Levels and above. An Advanced Apprentices also gets training in Key Skills in areas such as numeracy, communication, problem solving and team working, as well as the technical skills and knowledge needed in their chosen profession.

Apprentices train until they are competent, at a rate that matches their needs and those of their employer. It depends on the industry as to how long it takes an Apprentice to complete their training.
